     vb. n. Sustaining.] [OE. sustenen, susteinen, OF. sustenir,
     sostenir, F. soutenir (the French prefix is properly fr. L.
     subtus below, fr. sub under), L. sustinere; pref. sus- (see
     Sub-) + tenere to hold. See Tenable, and cf.
     Sustenance.]
