  Samphire \Sam"phire\ (? or ?; 277), n. [F. l'herbe de Saint
     Pierre. See Saint, and Petrel.] (Bot.)
     (a) A fleshy, suffrutescent, umbelliferous European plant
         ({Crithmum maritimum). It grows among rocks and on
         cliffs along the seacoast, and is used for pickles.
